Honouring Red Dress Day: A Commitment to Truth, Justice, and Indigenous Voices

Beaded red dress

On Red Dress Day, we at First Peoples Group honour the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S). This day is a solemn reminder of the violence that continues to impact Indigenous communities and the urgent need for justice, accountability, and healing.

As an Indigenous women-led consulting firm, we hold this day with deep personal and collective meaning. We reflect not only on the lives lost, but also on the strength of our women, the resilience of our communities, and the work that still lies ahead. Every red dress is a symbol of a life interrupted, a voice silenced, but also of a movement growing in strength.

In our work advising clients across sectors, we challenge them to reflect on how they are actively breathing life into the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, and equally, how they are responding to the 231 Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry into MMIWG. Both are essential frameworks for transformation. It is not enough to acknowledge the truth; we must live it, act on it, and carry it forward.

Red Dress Day is a day of remembrance, but also of responsibility. We each have a role in addressing the systemic issues that allow this crisis to persist. At First Peoples Group, we remain committed to ensuring the voices of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people guide the path forward.
