Through our partnership, we are designing a customized Cultural Safety Learning Module to be delivered in-person to select personnel, fostering deep engagement and meaningful discussions on Indigenous perspectives in healthcare. Additionally, we are developing a series of five e-learning modules to be delivered to the remaining personnel, ensuring that nearly 17,000 healthcare professionals across The Ottawa Hospital have access to critical learning on Indigenous history, cultural safety, and reconciliation in the healthcare system.

To ensure these learning modules are informed by authentic Indigenous voices and lived experiences, we engaged with local Indigenous Nations and organizations throughout the development process. Their guidance and knowledge were essential in shaping content that is culturally relevant, respectful, and impactful.

This initiative is a significant step toward creating a more culturally competent and inclusive healthcare environment—one where Indigenous patients, families, and communities feel seen, respected, and supported.

Through our collaboration, we assist in the implementation of their Reconciliation Action Plan, ensuring that Indigenous perspectives, priorities, and self-determination are meaningfully reflected in their work. We also provide guidance and strategic support to the Indigenous Advisory Council, helping to strengthen Indigenous representation and engagement within the organization.

Additionally, we offer ongoing consulting services and training opportunities focused on Indigenous cultural awareness, equipping Canadian Blood Services staff with the knowledge and tools to foster respectful and informed relationships with Indigenous communities.

Our partnership is rooted in a shared commitment to reconciliation, education, and creating inclusive and culturally safe spaces within Canada’s blood and plasma system.

Following these engagements, we compiled the insights shared with us into a final report, which includes key findings and recommendations for Memorial University. This report is publicly available and serves as a resource to guide the university in implementing a transparent and respectful approach to Indigenous verification.

Our work engaged rightsholders, stakeholders, interest groups, faculty, alumni, senior Queen’s staff, individuals, members from the Kingston urban Indigenous community, students and more importantly, elected leaders from sovereign nations on who’s traditional territory Queen’s University is located.

Based on what we have heard, our report consisted of seven (7) recommendations framed by the seven Grandfather Teachings; humility, wisdom, courage, honesty, truth, respect and love as well as the principles of the Great Law of Peace; righteousness, health and power. Each recommendation is significant and interweaves both what we have heard and these traditional teachings.

We count on the administration at Queen’s as well as those who will be tasked with developing the processes required to implement our recommendations to abide by these teachings and principles.

In early 2022 we began providing customized training for CATSA employees and all airport screening staff across Canada on Indigenous peoples in Canada to better serve Indigenous travellers, particularly those who travel with sacred and ceremonial items.

We will also provide training around the protocols that honour the sacred and ceremonial items many First Nations, Métis and Inuit Knowledge Keepers, Ceremonial Leaders, Ceremonial Helpers, Elders, Traditional Healers, Drummers, and Oral Historians carry on their travels across the world.

CATSA’s commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous people is an excellent manifestation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action.

Actions like creating Oshki Wupoowane | The Blanket Fund, which saw the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund work with the HBC to donate of all net profits from the sale of their iconic point blanket to Indigenous peoples.

Actions like re-naming all meeting room offices in their downtown Toronto store after Indigenous named places across Canada.

While its 350 plus years history has come to an end, we believe the work they started will lead to a better and brighter future for Indigenous people living in downtown Winnipeg and the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who will benefit from the Oshki Wupoowane Fund, supported by sales of the HBC Point Blanket.
