Summer Intern

Hannah Martin First Peoples Group's summer 2018 intern is Hannah Martin. Hannah is a Mi'kmaw and Scottish woman who was raised on the traditional, unceded land of Taqamajujk (Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia) and is a member of the Millbrook First Nation community. Hannah takes great pride in her heritage and the responsibility she has to the future generations of Mi’kmaq and our Mother Earth.

Hannah is a third year Honours Indigenous Studies student at McMaster University pursuing her undergraduate degree as a 2015 Joyce/Crawford Loran Scholar. After completing her degree, Hannah plans on continuing her education within both Indigenous and Western educational spaces. Her current goals are to obtain a degree in Indigenous law as well as become proficient in the Mi'kmaq language. She plans to one day settle in Mi’kma’ki where she hopes to strengthen her connection to community and pursue a career that will greatly benefit the Mi'kmaq nation.

Hannah has completed research on Indigenous women and leadership in social movements and on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. She is passionate about Indigenous Knowledge reclamation, justice and the law, and the revitalization of traditional governance systems. Hannah is a hand drummer and singer, and an emerging advocate for the Mi'kmaq nation.
